Why I Created the Lennon & McCartney Songwriting History Tour

When I created the Lennon & McCartney Songwriting History Tour, I wanted to go beyond a regular sightseeing tour rushing from one Beatles location to another.

I wanted to tell a connected story — how John, Paul, George and Ringo grew up in Liverpool, the circumstances that brought them together, and what influenced their songwriting.

Most importantly, I wanted to tell those stories at the places where they actually happened.

But conducting the tour has taught me something else. A good experience isn't just determined by places and stories. It's also about understanding the people I'm with.

Pretty much all of my guests have known the songs for most of their lives. Some remember the Beatles era; others discovered their music through parents. Some know an extraordinary amount about the group, while others simply love the music.

After conducting so many tours, I’ve found that my guests particularly value:

• Time to enjoy each location, without feeling hurried.

• A comfortable pace, with time to take photographs.

• Asking questions about the parts of the story that interest them the most.

• Comfort and easy access to the taxi using the specially designed ramp, step or swivel seat.

• And perhaps most importantly, context — understanding why a place matters rather than simply being shown where it is.

Those factors are the essence of a private tour. Without them, the stories and the experience are greatly weakened. 

Although the history itself never changes, every group arrives with different interests, memories and knowledge. That makes every tour unique.  

And that's one of the most enjoyable parts of being a private guide: finding out what interests the people sitting in the taxi and adapting the experience accordingly.

One of the highlights for me is watching Penny Lane take on a new meaning for guests as we drive through the neighbourhood and they begin to understand the story behind the lyrics—even if they first heard the song nearly sixty years ago

Something similar happens at Strawberry Field, the childhood homes and, particularly, St Peter’s Church in Woolton, where a mutual friend introduced Lennon to McCartney on 6 July 1957. 

Where John's childhood experience has become a pilgrimage for many.

These places are not just associated with the Beatles. They’re places where history was made.

That’s the tour I wanted to create—and the one my guests continue to help me shape.
